JTI is one of Malawi’s largest tobacco buyers. We have invested $435 million in our business here over the past five years, making us a significant player in the country’s tobacco industry.
We’ve been doing business in Malawi since 1999 when we took over from Africa Leaf Malawi Limited. With a workforce of 380 permanent and 1000 seasonal employees, we are contributing to our country’s socio-economic development.
Our company headquarters are in Lilongwe and we have regional offices in Blantyre and Mzuzu, with a chain of leaf technicians operating in all the tobacco districts of Malawi. Our leaf technicians work as agriculture advisers, supporting farmers across the country and promoting an industry that fuels Malawi’s economy. Our support means that farmers produce a quality crop, improving their production volumes and their earnings.
Tobacco production in Malawi has a very rich history, which can be traced back as far as the late 1800s. Production of the leaf increased in the 1970s and by 2000 our country was producing over 200 million metric tonnes of the crop annually.
Malawi relies on tobacco for about 65 percent of its total export earnings. Its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product is estimated at 38 percent. We are proud to be part of an industry which is powering the engine of Malawi’s economy.
But there is more to us that growing and exporting tobacco leaf. JTI’s approach to doing business includes a commitment to invest in the communities in which we operate, all around the world. In Malawi, we run the ARISE project – a programme aimed at keeping children from the tobacco growing district in school.
ARISE, an acronym for Achieving Reduction of Child Labour in Support of Education, is making a real difference to the problem of child labour. Our programme means that thousands of Malawian children have stayed in school while others have gone back to class years after abandoning school and working in tobacco fields.
The tobacco industry in Malawi contributes millions of dollars a year to the economy of the country.
Our investment in our people means JTI is a great company to work for.
