means embracing diverse thinking
At JTI we believe that new ideas, fresh perspectives and a range of opinions are just some of the benefits of diversity
Mid-Price & Premium Portfolio Brand Manager
I always wanted to work for a large company that offered the potential for growth and responsibility from day one.
When I began researching graduate programmes, JTI came across as an obvious choice — I saw an FMCG global business, offering first-class training and international opportunities.
I joined JTI’s graduate programme in September 2008 and completed placements within different areas of the Business in Merchandising, Logistics, Marketing, and Sales. At the end of the programme I undertook a management selection process that examined my performance and the skills I had developed throughout the graduate scheme.
Soon afterwards I became an Area Sales Manager, responsible for a team of nine people and 1,900 accounts.
The role of Trade Marketing Manager formed part of my personal development plan, so I was pleased to assume this position following 18 months as an Area Sales Manager.
My role focused on executing marketing strategies into a sales environment for the Key Multiple Grocer and Convenience Channels, working closely with our key accounts team.
I was able to transfer many of the skills I had developed in previous roles within the Company. Project management and effective communication was a key part of the role, as well as the ability to work well within a team and make effective decisions as I worked with a variety of different Functional teams day-to-day.
I loved the variety and enjoyed playing a part in executing exciting new projects taking place within the business, which meant that no day was the same!
After two years as a Trade Marketing Manager, I was fortunate enough to assume a Brand Manager position within the UK Marketing function and since then have become the Group Brand Manager for cigarettes in the UK Market. A key part of my role is to drive and implement innovative strategies for JTI brands in order to gain a competitive advantage and achieve short and long term growth for JTI.
Since commencing this role I have been able to draw on a number of the skills that I have developed in previous positions. Understanding the needs and realities of the retail environment, as well as having strong business acumen and commercial awareness are key to executing my role effectively.
Throughout my career with JTI I’ve learned that hard work and a positive attitude will help you to achieve your goals.
One of my goals with JTI is to work in international locations because I am keen to experience the dynamics of other JTI Markets. International mobility is one of JTI’s strong points, so I’m optimistic about achieving this.
I am extremely proud to be part of an organisation that is the market leader and that emulates the core values of being open, enterprising and challenging. Creativity and determination is evident across the Company and has helped us to achieve the position of being the number one tobacco manufacturer in the UK. As a result we have built a strong brand portfolio, maintaining the top three brands in the UK for three consecutive years. Looking to the future, continuing to push the boundaries is vital in order to retain this competitive advantage and this is something I’m looking forward to being a part of.
JTI has been recognised as a Global Top Employer for two consecutive years and the benefits available are what you would expect from a Company that has been awarded this status. My advice for anyone thinking of joining the Company is be ready to learn and embrace challenging opportunities when they arise. This is a leading Company that develops leaders.
C&TM Planning & Training Director
I’m currently responsible for Consumer and Trade Marketing (C&TM) Training and Planning. This means that I spend more or less half of my time developing training programs for the global C&TM community and half of my time on the planning side of the job where I’m leading the global annual and strategic C&TM planning process through planning briefs, strategic reviews of regional and market submissions and formulates presentations to JTI or JT senior management.
My career began at JTI in 1996 as a Junior Analyst in Business Development. I held business development and marketing roles at JTI's Geneva HQ for 10 years before moving to Russia where I was responsible for a number of brands, including Winston, Mild Seven, Russian Style and Wings.
After two years in Russia, I moved to the UK for one and a half years as Brand Director for Silk Cut. I then spent a year and a half in Austria as Marketing Director for that market. Finally, in January 2012, I moved back to Geneva.
JTI is a great company. You can interact with a wide spectrum of people, functions and cultures, which all contribute to professional and personal development.
I've always had a lot of interests outside of work, and among these, of course my family is my number one priority. Working at JTI allows me to find the right balance between my career and my family life. I have three children and have nevertheless been able to work in four different locations.
When I was growing up, I thought first about being a gemcutter, then later, a criminologist.
I've also always loved travelling and discovering new places, cultures and people. In 2000, I took a sabbatical from JTI for a 7-month backpacking trip around the world to realize a lifelong dream.
Corporate Strategy Manager
I'm actively involved in the coordination of strategic planning processes and in the development of strategic plan presentations to the JT senior management.
I was born and grew up in Milan. I graduated with a masters degree in Business and Economics. Before joining JTI I started up and managed a small farming company that specialized in production of extra virgin olive oil.
The first step at JTI was participating in MORE, the company’s leadership training program for graduates. It involves job rotation over a two-year period in different functions and regions.
My first assignment was Special Projects & Compliance Associate, in the Italian market. After that I moved to the headquarter in Geneva and worked for Consumer & Trade Marketing Finance.
The third assignment was in Tokyo within the Global Internal Audit department. After two amazing years in Japan, I was assigned to the Corporate Strategy division in Geneva. That's where I work today.
Great efforts are put into managing the careers of JTI managers and there are many opportunities for developing your abilities. I've acquired international managerial experience, working with other managers from all around the world, experiencing different cultures and management styles.
Manufacturing Vice President
I'm the Manufacturing Area Lead for Turkey, the Near East and Africa. The job includes coordinating manufacturing activities for JTI factories in South Africa, Tanzania, Jordan, Tunisia, as well as the Contract Manufacturing sites in Iran, Nigeria, Sudan
My days usually involves managing the manufacturing activities of our lead factory in Turkey while working closely with the factory managers and markets in the region. I try to visit each factory at least once a year to discuss the key factory initiatives with the management, spend time on the shop floor checking the production performance and meet with the market heads to ensure that the factory strategies are supporting the markets.
Being in charge of such a diverse region means I am never bored. Every day brings a new challenge and something to learn.
I joined in November 1997, having studied mechanical engineering in Russia and finance in the USA. My first role in JTI was a finance analyst at Petro factory in Russia.
I was born and grew up in Saint Petersburg, Russia and I also spent almost five years living in the United States before joining the company. After working at the Petro factory, I went to Geneva, then back to Petro to be Head of Production. Following that, I relocated to Ukraine to be Factory Manager
After JTI acquired the Gallaher tobacco business I was transferred to their Liggett-Ducat cigarette factory in Moscow, becoming the Head of Factory and lead on factory integration.
Regardless of the job you are doing here, you will never feel isolated or a small part of a big mechanism. It's a global company but you still feel you're part of a family.
During my time in school, Russia was still a very closed country and I always had the desire to see the world. At the time I was seriously thinking of working in the foreign affairs field.
Program and Development Director Consumer and Trade Marketing
There is no typical day! But let me try to give you a flavor of it. I could be reviewing visuals for a new brand launch, in discussions with my team, reviewing and analyzing our performance by brands and by regions to understand trends and compare them with competitors.
The gym's in the same building so I try to get there at lunchtime. In the afternoon I could be reading and answering emails, then attend a meeting with an agency about projects that we're working on.
I've been with JTI 18 years. I started as Market Research Manager in Kuala Lumpur. After 5 years in local marketing, I took up an international assignment based in Hong Kong and then relocated to Geneva.
I moved back to Malaysia as Marketing Director, then Head of Portfolio Brand and Trade Strategy and later my current position. Before joining JTI I was a Market Research Manager in Malaysia. I have a degree in Business Administration with a major in Marketing.
Most companies say people are their greatest asset but JTI really walks the talk. Our culture promotes development and growth, there is investment in training and employees have the opportunity to work in different functions and countries.
I think I wanted to be a nurse. And then one visit to the hospital changed my mind, it's a job with a lot of emotional demands.
IT Service Manager
Together with my colleague Diederik Kaijser, I am responsible for all aspects of IT in The Netherlands while the IT Manager is on a project in Trier.
My first four years working for JTI were spent working for the Global Service Desk. Moving to a market IT function is helping me to gain a greater understanding of how the business side of JTI operates.
My role is to ensure that all IT services are planned, budgeted, aligned and executed in line with business requirements, budget, agreed timeframe, quality requirements and standards. The role has a broad scope and means that one minute I can be providing IT support to my colleagues and the next minute negotiating contracts with 3rd parties. Another aspect of my role is to be both proactive and reactive in providing IT solutions for business needs. This can take many forms, including projects, workshops and training sessions.
I studied Information Technology and Telecommunications at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and my first job was working on the server production line for Dell.
I've been at JTI for 5 years and have amassed a great deal of skills since joining. Training and development are part of life here.
I've completed the JTI Americas Leadership program and I am currently in the middle of studying for a MBA..
It's strange to think I first wanted to be a vet.
JTI is constantly evolving. It's very challenging but also very rewarding.
I've been introduced to working in a multi-cultural environment, have developed great relationships with colleagues from all over the world and have a vast exposure to different cultures.
I've always felt respected at JTI. The work I do has never gone un-noticed and recognition is never far around the corner. I feel empowered to constantly better myself.
