Since manufactured cigarettes first became popular, ingredients have been introduced either to add flavour or aroma, or to keep the product in good condition. For instance, sugars and cocoa help to enhance the tobacco flavour, and glycerine, along with water, help to keep the cigarettes moist once they have been packed. Other ingredients are used to provide the individual taste characteristic of our brands.
We can define, generally, two classes of ingredients used in cigarettes. Those added directly to tobacco during manufacture and those used in the production of items such as filters and cigarette paper, commonly known as non-tobacco materials.
Authorization for the use of ingredients in tobacco products is subject to regular and strict control by appropriate national authorities. The use of ingredients in tobacco products is controlled in some countries by legislation and in others by voluntary agreements between the government and the tobacco industry.
We have provided ingredient information to governments and national authorities who have requested such information, asking only in return that the governments involved respect our inherent trade secrets. As with many well-known consumer products, the flavor formulas used in the brand recipes of our cigarettes are highly confidential and should not be disclosed to our competitors. We have actively sought to work with governments to ensure that they have the ingredient information they need whilst protecting our need for trade secrecy.
JTI confirms that any ingredient used in our products complies with appropriate national regulations and voluntary agreements.
