A new breed of tobacco company

We’ve been redefining the way a tobacco company operates since 1999

In an era where the risks associated with tobacco are well known, consumers are seeking out increasingly diverse smoking and vaping experiences.

That’s why we see a bright future ahead for JTI and our industry - the opportunities to bring a wider variety of products to market are more significant than ever before. The driving force behind our success to date has been our ability to listen to consumers and provide existing adult smokers and vapers with the products they demand and desire. That remains the case today and will be for the foreseeable future: whether through achieving ever-greater quality and sustainability within our conventional products or developing new vaping products.

Yes, this means we have to be prepared to reinvent ourselves sometimes, as we have done in the past. To become more agile in the way we work and continue innovating, adapting and delivering in an ever-changing business environment. But as our CEO, Eddy Pirard, states: “We have the stamina and the energy and we’re excited. If we set ourselves challenges, we’ll get there.”

We need to be a company that listens to consumers in a genuine way, listening to their needs and concerns, and providing the information they require to make an informed choice.
Eddy Pirard, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Our reason for being is clear:

To support freedom of choice for consumers and provide them with fulfilling moments

To achieve our goal, we focus on three key priorities across the entirety of our business:

Pursue an ambitious growth agenda
intro counters 3x CV
Raise the bar in Reduced-Risk Products

Prioritize our investments

Consumer-led innovation and harmonious product coexistence

Our group’s corporate objective is to ensure that we serve four constituencies in a balanced way: our consumers, our shareholders, our employees and society in general.
But for us to decide on the right mix of products for the future, there’s no question that consumers head that list.

Timescales of acceptance of vaping products can vary hugely by region and country, reflecting a mix of social, cultural and economic considerations. We believe the role of innovators is to provide more options, not direct or dictate consumer choice.
Takehiko Tsutsui, Executive Vice President, Reduced-Risk Products

We firmly believe that consumers are the ultimate catalyst for change and drive innovation. It’s up to our talented teams worldwide to provide these innovations, offering up new and better choices while being clear and transparent about product benefits and risks. This is exemplified in our approach to Reduced-Risk Products (RRP).

However, we understand that change can take time, and consumers around the world want different things from the products we offer. That’s why we’re also committed to fostering a harmonious coexistence between conventional products and RRP for the foreseeable future.

Maintaining viability and visibility

To deliver sustainable success that works for all, we must have access to the things that any industry sector needs:

  • Consumers
  • Innovation
  • Capital
  • Talent
  • Raw materials
  • A voice

Maintaining viability and visibility
We must provide the ability for all consumers and employees to see that there is growth for our industry if we follow our consumers to where they want us to take them.
Eddy Pirard, President and Chief Executive Officer

Building a sustainable future

The world we’re operating in is more challenging than ever. All of the parties we interact with expect us to be acting responsibly as we look to secure sustainable, long-term success.

The concept of sustainability has come a long way from its environmental origins and now encompasses a much wider sweep of economic and societal considerations.

Thanks to our multinational nature and corporate ethics, we can be proud of the sustainability of our business model and our contribution towards some of the objectives within the UN’s global sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Compliance at JTI: maintaining the highest standards of ethical behavior

Our future doesn’t just depend on our safeguarding of the natural world – it depends on our people, and the way we all interact with one another. From ensuring that every employee adheres to our Code of Conduct to operating a certification program for every supplier we work with, it is our continued commitment to integrity and responsible business practices that will set us apart.

We adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior

    Our Code of Conduct

The JTI Code of Conduct acts as the compass for our business, pointing us in the right direction with every decision we have to make. Any decision can potentially have an impact on what we have achieved and continue to achieve – we each have an individual responsibility to contribute to our collective success.

As our CEO, Eddy Pirard, says, it helps us to “better understand what our company is about and remind ourselves at the end of each working day we did the right thing.”

We expect all of our employees and the partners we do business with to share our values and adopt clear commitments to the standards outlined in our Code. These standards include aspects such as respecting human rights, protecting the environment, ensuring health and safety, fighting bribery and corruption and combating illegal trade. We have a range of channels through which employees and business partners can raise concerns about Code of Conduct-related concerns in confidence and without fear of retaliation.

So, what guides someone working in our industry?

Our Code of Conduct brings out the best in all of us. Read what our CEO has to say about it.

    Anti-bribery and corruption

We do not tolerate bribery or corruption in any form, from employees and business partners alike.

Bribery and corruption present legal and reputational risks for any company and we make sure to comply with all relevant laws in each country that we operate in. Above and beyond this, we actively support international efforts to fight bribery and corruption by implementing our own ABC policy.
If any of our employees or business partners suspect an act of bribery or corruption, we strongly encourage them to speak up and raise their concerns.

Contact us with any concerns relating to bribery and corruption.

    Responsible procurement

To make sure the suppliers we work with are meeting the high standards we demand, we operate a certification program for all suppliers.

We invite suppliers who want to work with us to apply for certification and will only start working with them once the certification process has been completed.
We review each supplier annually through the certification renewal process, to make sure the supplier continues to maintain our high standards.

    External Engagement Principles

Engagement with external stakeholders is an integral part of our business. We are open to and seek dialogue with governmental authorities and members of think tanks, business associations and academia around the world to address issues about the manufacture, sale and use of our products.

We are guided by our Code of Conduct, which prohibits the provision of money, gifts, entertainment or anything else of value to any government or public official for the purpose of gaining an improper business advantage.

We are committed to engaging transparently in the public decision-making processes which affect our business. We actively participate in the debate about regulation of combustible products and those that have the potential to reduce the risks associated with smoking, taxation, elimination of all forms of illegal tobacco trade and sustainability.

Involvement of all stakeholders is critical to ensuring that regulation is effective, proportionate, workable and supported by credible evidence. The benefits of full stakeholder participation are widely recognized as they bring everyone’s expertise, perspectives and ideas into the policy-making process.

To ensure that no single voice, including that of tobacco control organizations, unduly influences decisions on public policies, we encourage more transparency, accountability and inclusiveness. Excluding us from the policy debate is counter-productive. It undermines trust and removes the possibility for evidence-based policy-making.

In line with this, we will always defend our freedom to participate in public policy debate and to protect our legitimate business interests for the benefit of our stakeholders and consumers.

Consumers should have the freedom to choose legal products, as long as they have all the relevant information about these. They should be given the option to make their own informed lifestyle choices within the framework of the law. The best way to achieve this is by providing education and information in a transparent manner.
