Access to clean water remains a significant challenge in Morocco, particularly in rural areas where infrastructure is often lacking. With less than half of the rural population having access to safe drinking water, there is an urgent need for sustainable solutions that support national efforts.
Since 2019, JTI has been dedicated to tackling this pressing issue through our Global Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiative, which aims to provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to one million people by 2025. In 2024, we extended our commitment to Morocco with the launch of the Abãr Project in collaboration with the association El Baraka Angels. This local initiative focuses on transforming lives by providing access to clean water in some of the country's most marginalized areas.
The Mission: 100 Wells, 100 Villages in Two Years
The Abãr Project aims to drill at least 100 wells across 100 villages within two years, providing clean water to over 80,000 people. This initiative is about much more than just water access — it aims to facilitate daily life, enhance basic services for disadvantaged rural communities, and improve water usage for local populations. By addressing these fundamental needs, we also empower small-scale farmers, traders, cooperatives, schools, and other community groups. At JTI, we are committed to reducing inequalities, building stronger communities, and ensuring clean water access for all.
