Everyone knows about its privileged natural environment and climate, but the Canary Islands are much more than sun and beach. Although tourism is the jewel in the crown of the island's economy, there are many other sectors in the Canary Islands, such as the tobacco industry, which over the years have shown their capacity to generate employment, wealth and be a magnet for attracting foreign investment.
JTI has maintained a close relationship with the Canary Islands for more than six decades. Since 1961 Atlántico S.A. distributed RJR brands (now owned by JTI) in the Islands until the opening of its own offices in 1988, including a factory on the island of La Palma. With the subsequent acquisition of Gallaher, JTI made a special commitment to this region since, in the process, CITA, the historic tobacco company from the Canary Islands, became part of the company, thus guaranteeing the continuity of the largest industrial tobacco production center in Spain.
The Tenerife factory is today a benchmark in the tobacco industry, being the biggest tobacco factory in Spain. In order to equip it with the most advanced and competitive technology, JTI has invested close to 75 million euros in the last decade, 33 million of which corresponds to the period 2021-2023.
This sustained investment over time, combined with a highly qualified team committed to continuous improvement, has made it possible for the Tenerife factory to compete with leading production centers worldwide.
So much so that, at present, the entire production of cigarillos destined for the European market and the entire production of cigarettes in soft packs for the peninsular market, comes out of the Chamberí district in Santa Cruz de Tenerife every year.
As a reference operator in more than 130 countries around the world, environmental protection plays a key role in all phases of the manufacturing and marketing process at JTI.
Consequently, many of the improvements made at the Tenerife plant in recent years have been aimed at making it a more efficient and sustainable production center, focusing on the use of renewable energies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible.
The most relevant indicators (KPIs) in our path of Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) are focused on the optimization of Energy Efficiency; Occupational Safety of all workers; Productive Efficiency and Process Performance.
