JTI has been operating in Russia since the establishment of the company in 1999, when Japan Tobacco acquired the non-American business of US-based R.J. Reynolds. Since 2007, JTI has been the leader of the Russian tobacco market.
In 2018, JTI acquired Donskoy Tabak, a leading Russian tobacco company. After this deal JTI strengthened market leadership.
Four JTI production sites operate in Russia, including two cigarette factories - Petro in Saint-Petersburg and Donskoy Tabak in Rostov-on-Don, as well as two supply chain factories: JTI Yelets in the Lipetsk region and Cres Neva in the Leningrad region.
JTI is the biggest investor and the leading tax contributor in the Russian tobacco industry. Over the period from 1999 to 2021 its investments in the Russian economy have exceeded $4,8 billion. In 2021, the company's excise payments provided 1% of the total revenue of the Russian Federation state budget.
