JT becomes majority shareholder of Ethiopia’s NTE on December 21, 2017.
The National Tobacco Enterprise (Ethiopia) Share Company (NTE) was established in 1942.
NTE manufactures, distributes and sells Nyala, the leading domestic tobacco brand in the country. The company provides direct employment to over 670 Ethiopians and indirect employment to over 8,000 tobacco out-growers.
In addition to its factory in Addis Ababa, NTE owns and manages five tobacco farms – Robi, Billate, Hawassa, Wolayta and East Shoa.
NTE is a Member of the Japan Tobacco International Group of Companies (JTI) – a leading international tobacco products company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. JTI owns 71% of the shares of NTE acquired from the Government of Ethiopia in 2016/2017 for USD 1 billion. This is the largest private sector investment by a Japanese company in Ethiopia to date.
