FOR ENRICHING MOMENTS
With its many international visiting exhibitions, the Museum of Art Lucerne is among the most important Swiss art museums. But the art is not only for experts. Together with Pro Senectute Canton Lucerne, the Museum of Art Lucerne regularly organizes guided tours for senior citizens.
The location of the Museum of Art Lucerne could not be better. Right next door to the world-famous Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre (KKL), the Museum of Art Lucerne is located just a stone’s throw from the train station. “Thanks to its proximity to the lake, many guests also combine their visit with a round trip on Lake Lucerne,” says director Fanni Fetzer. This is probably one of the reasons why the museum records a very high number of visitors in summer. “People from all over the world visit us,” says Fetzer. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. She emphasizes: “An art museum is for everyone."
Older people are particularly open to art
But that's not all Fanni Fetzer has to say on the subject. The Museum of Art Lucerne is committed to addressing the entire breadth of society with targeted campaigns. “We also want to reach people who wouldn’t otherwise come to us.” The director loves it when school classes visit the museum. “Children and young people look at art in their own unique way and are not afraid to ask questions.” What’s true for young people is very much the same for older people. “The elderly are sometimes almost more open-minded when it comes to art,” says Fetzer. For her, one thing is sure: “Viewing art is an enrichment at any age.”
Long term partnerships
To enable as many people as possible to visit the Museum of Art Lucerne, the institution, together with the Lucerne section of Pro Senectute Canton Lucerne, organizes regular guided tours for senior citizens. “It doesn’t matter whether visitors have had anything to do with art before or not,” says Fanni Fetzer. What is much more important is that people get to talk to each other and share a common experience. Fetzer is convinced that everyone can access art – “To do this, they must be willing to cross the museum's threshold." Those who have crossed it will immerse themselves into a completely different world high above Lake Lucerne. “We prefer to guide our Pro Senectute Canton Lucerne guests through colorful and cheerful exhibitions,” explains Fanni Fetzer.
Influence beyond the region
The cooperation between the Museum of Art Lucerne and Pro Senectute Canton Lucerne is supported by JTI. “Thanks to this valuable commitment, we can offer older ladies and gentlemen a pleasant afternoon in the museum together with our art educators.” By networking with other institutions and remaining open to a broad public in the future, the Museum of Art Lucerne is making a long-term contribution to the influence of the entire region, says Fetzer. What's more: the visit is concluded with afternoon coffee and cake in the museum café on the 4th floor of the KKL – with a wonderful view of the lake and the hustle and bustle of the city.
