Join us on our ambitious path to zero emissions as we reshape our business for a sustainable future.
Climate change isn't someone else's problem – it's everyone's problem. And as a global company, we know we have a big role to play in tackling it. The tobacco industry may not be a significant contributor to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, but that’s no excuse for inaction. In fact, the JT Group has long been recognized as a leader in reducing GHG emissions and has been included in the prestigious CDP Climate A List since 2019.
We already measure our performance across a range of environmental topics, and we’ve combined that with an ambitious target: to be Carbon Neutral for our operations by 2030 and to achieve Net-Zero GHG emissions across our entire value chain by 2050.
Our near-term and long-term targets, aligned with current science-based thinking and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a respected independent body that drives ambitious climate action.
But what do those targets really mean, and how are we going to get there?
Let's break it down. Our emissions come from three main areas: The energy we use in our offices and factories, the fuel used to transport our products and the activities of our suppliers and farming communities.
We've already cut our direct emissions (that's from our own operations) which we report on yearly basis. But we know we need to do more.
Through ongoing efforts to reduce emissions across our factories, offices and warehouses, we are currently over-achieving our target. As a result, we will be carbon neutral for our own operations in 2028, two years earlier than originally planned.
In 2025, we also launched our offsetting strategy to address emissions that cannot be eliminated through reduction efforts. These are known as residual emissions. We offset them by investing in high-quality carbon credits from certified projects.
Our first investment is in an external renewable energy project in Kazakhstan, where JTI has both a factory and market presence. We purchased enough certified carbon credits to offset the residual 2025 emissions from 15 GSC factories, 2 leaf threshing plants, and all GSC warehouses – totaling 18,745 tons of CO2 emissions. This project meets high-quality standards, with independent verification and certification. You can find more details on our 2025 offsetting results via this link.
A long-term Net-Zero target is not enough. We need to take action now. Having clear, credible and responsible milestones will help focus the business, drive improvements and measure our progress.
We're clear about where we're heading – Net-Zero by 2050. But getting there means taking action today. We're investing in new technologies, working closely with our partners, and constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.
