The challenge ahead

Climate change isn't someone else's problem – it's everyone's problem. And as a global company, we know we have a big role to play in tackling it. The tobacco industry may not be a significant contributor to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, but that’s no excuse for inaction. In fact, the JT Group has long been recognized as a leader in reducing GHG emissions and has been included in the prestigious CDP Climate A List since 2019.

We already measure our performance across a range of environmental topics, and we’ve combined that with an ambitious target: to be Carbon Neutral for our operations by 2030 and to achieve Net-Zero GHG emissions across our entire value chain by 2050.

These commitments are supported by near-term 2030 emissions reduction targets, aligned with current science-based thinking and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a respected independent body that drives ambitious climate action.

But what do those targets really mean, and how are we going to get there?

Understanding our impact

Let's break it down. Our emissions come from three main areas: The energy we use in our offices and factories, the fuel used to transport our products and the activities of our suppliers and farming communities.

We've already cut our direct emissions (that's from our own operations) by 42% since 2019. But we know we need to do more.

Our roadmap to zero

We're taking action across every part of our business: In our operations, we're switching to 100% renewable electricity, making our buildings more energy-efficient, and transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles. On the farming front, we're working closely with farmers to reduce their emissions through more sustainable practices and supporting their switch to renewable energy. Throughout our supply chain, we're partnering with suppliers who share our commitment, finding innovative ways to cut transportation emissions and investing in cleaner technologies.

A long-term Net-Zero target is not enough. We need to take action now. Having clear, credible and responsible milestones will help focus the business, drive improvements and measure our progress.

What's next?

We're clear about where we're heading – Net-Zero by 2050. But getting there means taking action today. We're investing in new technologies, working closely with our partners, and constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.
